plumbing appliances | Boston MA Plumbing ServiceA large part of your life centers around the kitchen. It’s not just the place where you pop a toaster pastry into the toaster for breakfast or microwave yourself a cup of noodles. It’s where you go to make tea or soup for a sick loved one. It’s where you prepare meals together at the end of a hard day. And yes, it’s also where you go for that midnight bowl of ice cream after a breakup. The kitchen is also where most of your most complicated and expensive appliances are located. Each one of them has at least one or more water supply, gas, electrical, and/or drain lines. If they fail, they can cause a big mess and possibly some serious damage. It’s important to keep them in good repair so that you can enjoy your kitchen for a long time to come.

Main Kitchen & Laundry Room Plumbing Appliances

Let’s take a look at each of the main appliances in your kitchen and laundry room and see what maintenance issues might come up:
  • Oven and Stove
  • Refrigerator
  • Dishwasher
  • Garbage Disposal
  • Washing Machine
  • Hot Water Heater
Oven and Stove: These two appliances are often combined into a single unit. They are available in either gas or electric versions. We’ll focus on gas ovens and stoves for this article. The biggest difference between a gas and electric stove is the presence of an open flame. For some kinds of cooking, this can be an advantage. On the other hand, depending on the age of the appliance, care has to be taken when relighting the pilot light. A good Boston plumber from Plumbers 911 can handle repair or installation of the gas supply lines. Refrigerator: The biggest plumbing issues of a refrigerator are the drainage and the water supply lines for units with a built-in ice maker. The drainage line is for collecting and removing the water that constantly condenses in the freezer. Occasionally, this get can get clogged and can cause water damage behind the fridge. Dishwasher: A dishwasher requires both water supply and drainage lines as well. Those are usually tied into the same main lines that the kitchen sink uses. There is usually also air gap device connected to the dishwasher’s drain line to prevent waste water from the sink flowing into the dishwasher. The single biggest problem occurs when the dishwasher drain is clogged, allowing water to run all over the kitchen floor. When that happens, the clog needs to be removed and the drain cleaned (as well as all the soapy water on the floor). Garbage Disposal: This device sits under the sink and doesn’t actually have an independent water supply or drain. Instead, the water comes directly from the tap. It’s also one of the most dangerous appliances in the house. Never, ever, ever, EVER stick your hand into it to clear a stuck object. If you turn it on but it doesn’t work, there are two possible problems. 1. If there is no humming noise coming from the unit, it’s not getting any electricity. Check your breakers, see if it’s plugged in, and push the reset button on the bottom of the unit. 2. If there is a humming noise, the flywheel is stuck or jammed. Turn off the power to the device from the electrical supply (just turning the wall switch is not enough). Use the offset wrench (assuming you didn’t toss it along with the box) to turn the flywheel manually until it spins freely. Then reconnect the power, push the reset button again, run some water into the disposal, and THEN turn the unit on. That should do the trick. Remember: No hands in the garbage disposal! Even when you think it’s turned off! Washing Machine: Moving away from the kitchen, we get to the washing machine. It has the usual water, electrical, and drainage needs that the other appliances do, but the volume of water that it deals with is much greater. This means that drainage is a key issue. The drain line from the washing machine is designed to fit loosely into the house drain. This naturally creates an air gap which prevents the machine from siphoning dirty water back into your load of laundry. Hot Water Heater: Finally, here’s the one that you don’t often see, but probably rely on the most. There is a wide variety of hot water heaters, but they all have the same goal in mind: get you hot water when you want it. The ones that people most often think of are called tank-type water heaters. They’re basically a large water storage tank with a heating element at the bottom, either electrical or gas. There are also tankless water heaters that are attached directly to the water supply lines to each hot water faucet. They can be very efficient, but cannot give as high a flow as a traditional heater.
