Oven and Stove: These two appliances are often combined into a single unit. They are available in either gas or electric versions. We’ll focus on gas ovens and stoves for this article. Turn off the power to the device from the electrical supply (just turning the wall switch is not enough). Use the offset wrench (assuming you didn’t toss it along with the box) to turn the flywheel manually until it spins freely. Then reconnect the power, push the reset button again, run some water into the disposal, and THEN turn the unit on. That should do the trick. Remember: No hands in the garbage disposal! Even when you think it’s turned off! Washing Machine: Moving away from the kitchen, we get to the washing machine. It has the usual water, electrical, and drainage needs that the other appliances do, but the volume of water that it deals with is much greater. This means that drainage is a key issue. The drain line from the washing machine is designed to fit loosely into the house drain. This naturally creates an air gap which prevents the machine from siphoning dirty water back into your load of laundry. Hot Water Heater: Finally, here’s the one that you don’t often see, but probably rely on the most. There is a wide variety of hot water heaters, but they all have the same goal in mind: get you hot water when you want it. The ones that people most often think of are called tank-type water heaters. They’re basically a large water storage tank with a heating element at the bottom, either electrical or gas. There are also tankless water heaters that are attached directly to the water supply lines to each hot water faucet. They can be very efficient, but cannot give as high a flow as a traditional heater.
