Finding the Right Boston Plumber for Toilet Repair
Plumbers 911 Experts Can Does Toilet Repair Immediately and Efficiently
Of all the
plumbing fixtures in your home, toilets are some of the most complicated to repair. First, there’s a large number of moving parts. Secondly, it’s a fairly heavy and bulky item to move. Finally, they’re often wedged into places that are hard to work around. However, there are a number of minor repairs that you can do easily for yourself.
It is advisable to call a professional plumbing expert for cases such as broken for a non-functional toilet. While we think that fixing the problem ourselves will save us money, oftentimes it would cost us more.
DIY Toilet Repair
Before doing any type of toilet repair, especially around the base or bowl, be sure to clean it thoroughly with a good disinfecting cleaner and wear gloves at all times.
Broken or loose toilet seats: This is the easiest do-it-yourself repair. The seat will be attached with a couple of wing nuts to the back of the toilet bowl. Remove the wingnuts, then replace the seat. If the seat is loose, try installing rubber bushings around the seat attachment bolts and installing stabilizers to the bottom of the seat.
Excessively running toilets: If you have a gravity feed toilet (we’ll talk more about the kinds of toilets in a little bit), fixing a constantly running toilet could be as easy as changing the flapper valve in the bottom of the tank. If replacing that doesn’t work, you may have to replace the flush valve seat.
Clogged toilets: This is probably the most common of all toilet issues, and one of the grossest. Obviously, plunging the toilet is the first step. If the toilet bowl is full of water (and other stuff), gently lower the plunger in and gently pump it a couple of times to let the air escape. That way nothing will slosh over the rim of the bowl when you really start going. If the plunger doesn’t work, you’ll have to use an auger. However, in order to avoid damaging the porcelain of the bowl, it’s important to use a closet auger.
But let’s say that you’ve got a more complicated problem and need the services of a professional plumbing technician. Call us at Plumbers 911 to be connected to a highly-trained locally owned and operated plumbing contractor.
Toilet Replacement by Qualified Boston Plumbers
Did you know that you can save a lot of money over the long term by replacing your toilet with a more efficient model? People can use around ten gallons of water a day just by flushing the toilet. Fortunately, there are a lot of options when it comes to toilets. Here are a few of them:
Gravity-feed toilets: A
gravity feed toilet uses (as you can guess) gravity to flush the waste out of the bowl. When you turn the handle, the flapper valve is raised, allowing water to drop from the bottom of the tank into the bowl. They’re relatively quiet, doesn’t require a lot of water pressure, and is relatively simple to repair when necessary.
Pressure-feed toilets: These models use air pressure to increase the force of water flowing through the bowl. As the water fills a sealed tank, it compresses the remaining air, which increases the pressure in the tank. These are better at preventing clogs, but require more water pressure and tend to be noisier than gravity-feed units.
WaterSense Certification: Because toilet flushing accounts for about 30% of all household water use, the Environmental Protection Agency has taken steps to reduce that statistic. First, all toilets are required to use no more than 1.6 gallons of water per flush. Toilets with a
WaterSense label use less than 1.28 gallons per flush. It’s a good option for saving water (unless you live in Texas or California, where it’s required).
Comfort height toilets: These are becoming more popular because they raise the seat to about 17 to 19 inches high. They can be fitted with either gravity-feed or pressure-assist tanks. They are also a good option for people who have limited mobility and have difficulty bending their hips or knees.
