Fall plumbing tips

With fall quickly approaching, Plumbers 911 wants to provide you with some tips to extend the life of your plumbing appliances, plumbing fixtures and plumbing systems!

Depending on where you live, the variable weather could put a strain on your plumbing appliances, fixtures and systems. Protecting these can help save you money and headaches down the road.

Protecting your exterior

There are a few things you can do outside of your house to better prepare your home for the incoming fall and winter weather.

Disconnect your hose

Disconnecting your outdoor hose may be the most important plumbing tip to protect your home from possible damage. If the hose is not disconnected, water may enter your interior pipes, freeze and then leave those pipes susceptible to bursting.

In addition to disconnecting your hose, it is important to completely shut off all water valves leading to your outdoor hose. Although not necessary, a faucet cover can be easily installed to prevent your outdoor faucet from freezing and causing damage.

Protecting your interior

Insulate your pipes

Although your house may be heated, insulating your pipes is a great step to take to prevent them from bursting.

The fall is the perfect time to invest in insulation for your piping system. Since many of your pipes are hidden in ceilings or behind walls, it may be difficult to pinpoint a crack or leak if the cold weather causes your pipes to freeze.

Not only will insulating your pipes protect your expensive piping system, it will also protect everything under and around your piping system from unexpected water damage.

Drain your water heater

One of the less important but still helpful fall plumbing tips is to drain your water heater. Over time, sediment and rust builds up in your water heater. Doing this will keep your water hot and free of debris.

There are also a number of other precautionary measures you can take to prevent damage to plumbing appliances, fixtures and systems.

If you would like to have a plumber inspect your home for any of these issues or others, contact Plumbers 911! Plumbers 911 will refer you to an expert local plumber, who will give you the best advice and can perform emergency service.
